What We Do

Explore our goals

Academic Tutoring: Reading

  • Designed to support children at all reading levels whether they are on grade level, struggling, or have diagnosed learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
  • We use a systematic, evidence-based approach rooted in the Science of Reading, ensuring that all students receive the instruction they need to become confident and proficient readers.

βœ… Assessments & Progress Monitoring – We begin with an initial assessment to identify strengths and areas needing support. Students receive ongoing progress monitoring, ensuring they are making measurable gains.

βœ… Multisensory Instruction – Every child learns differently! Our tutoring uses hands-on activities, movement, visual aids, and interactive lessons to engage multiple senses, making learning more effective and enjoyable.

βœ… Targeted Support for Reading & Math – We use research-based programs tailored to how the brain learns best.

Our reading instruction follows the Science of Reading, a research-backed approach that builds strong literacy skills through:
🧠 Phonemic Awareness – Teaching kids to recognize and manipulate sounds in words
πŸ”€ Phonics & Decoding – Breaking words into parts for easier reading
πŸ“– Fluency & Comprehension – Helping students read smoothly and understand what they read

This method is especially beneficial for children who struggle with dyslexia, reading fluency, or comprehension.

This program is ideal for PreK-12th grade students who:
βœ”οΈ Need one-on-one or small-group academic support
βœ”οΈ Struggle with reading, math, or foundational skills
βœ”οΈ Benefit from hands-on, structured, and multisensory learning

πŸ’‘ Focuses on real-world problem-solving – Strengthens number sense and math confidence

Perfect for students who need a different approach to learning math or who struggle with traditional textbook methods.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)Β

  • Assisting children in developing tools for self-regulation and emotional management.
  • Addressing challenges such as anxiety, anger/defiance, and disruptive behaviors.
  • Strengthening social communication and social skills.

Each SEL group includes no more than six students, ensuring personalized attention and a safe, supportive environment where children feel understood and valued.

SEL teaches children to:
βœ… Recognize their emotions – Is your child feeling frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed but unsure how to express it? SEL helps children name their emotions instead of acting out.
βœ… Regulate their reactions – Instead of tantrums, anger outbursts, or shutting down, kids learn tools to calm themselves, ask for help, and make better choices.
βœ… Improve communication – Whether it’s asking for a turn, making friends, or expressing frustration without yelling, children develop positive ways to interact with others.
βœ… Solve problems & build relationships – We teach kids to read social cues, resolve conflicts, and understand others’ perspectives, making peer interactions smoother and friendships stronger.

πŸ”΅ Zones of Regulation – Kids learn to identify their emotions using four simple color-coded zones (Blue = Sad/Tired, Green = Calm/Ready to Learn, Yellow = Excited/Worried, Red = Angry/Overwhelmed). We teach coping strategies to help children move between zones appropriately.

πŸ’¬ Everyday Speech Curriculum – Students practice real-life social interactions through engaging activities, videos, and role-playing, reinforcing skills like taking turns, listening, problem-solving, and handling disagreements.

🎭 Interactive Learning – Through games, stories, movement, and hands-on exercises, children practice emotional awareness and self-control in a fun, engaging way.

This program is designed for PreK-12th grade students who:
βœ”οΈ Have frequent tantrums, meltdowns, or difficulty controlling frustration
βœ”οΈ Struggle with making or keeping friends
βœ”οΈ Have trouble expressing feelings or understanding others’ emotions
βœ”οΈ Need support managing anxiety, impulsivity, or social interactions

Executive Functioning Coaching

At De Learning Compass Center, we help students develop the essential thinking skills needed to stay organized, manage time, plan ahead, and self-regulate. Our Executive Functioning (EF) Coaching program uses the SMARTS Curriculum, a research-based approach that teaches students how to take control of their learning and daily responsibilities.

  • Focusing on attention, organizational skills, planning, self-monitoring, and working memory.
  • Providing strategies to enhance academic success and life skills.

Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that help students:

βœ… Stay organized – Keep track of assignments, deadlines, and materials
βœ… Manage time effectively – Plan ahead and avoid last-minute stress
βœ… Follow multi-step directions – Break tasks into manageable steps
βœ… Stay focused & shift attention – Learn strategies to avoid distractions
βœ… Control emotions & impulses – Develop self-regulation skills for better decision-making

These skills are crucial for success in school, work, and life but don’t always come naturallyβ€”they need to be taught and practiced!

We use SMARTS (Strategies, Motivation, and Awareness for Real-life Thinking Success), a research-backed curriculum developed by Harvard researchers to strengthen executive function skills.

πŸ“ Personalized Strategies – Students learn tools that match their unique strengths and challenges.
🎯 Hands-on Activities – Engaging lessons help students practice EF skills in real-life scenarios.
πŸ“Š Self-Monitoring & Goal Setting – Students track their progress and gain independence in learning.

This program is designed for PreK-12th grade students who:
βœ”οΈ Struggle with organization, time management, or homework/task completion
βœ”οΈ Have difficulty focusing or following multi-step directions
βœ”οΈ Need support with planning, problem-solving, or emotional regulation

Enrichment Classes: Spanish

  • Classes designed for various proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

Enrichment Coaching and Collaboration

  • Tailored to different levels to meet the diverse interests and abilities of students.

At De Learning Compass Center, we celebrate different ways of learning! Our approach is designed for students who think outside the box, including those who are neurodivergent, gifted, ADHD, autistic, dyslexic, have learning disabilities or struggle with emotions and anxiety. Instead of a traditional sit-and-worksheet approach, we create an engaging, movement-friendly learning environment tailored to each child’s needs.

βœ… Pomodoro Method – We use short, focused work sessions with movement breaks to help students stay engaged and avoid burnout.
βœ… Hands-On & Multisensory Learning – Lessons incorporate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities to make learning more accessible.

We understand that self-regulation is key to learning, so we provide a dedicated sensory room where students can explore tools and strategies to help them calm, focus, and reset.

Every child learns differently, so we offer a variety of seating options to support focus, movement, and sensory needs:

πŸ”„ Wobble stools & swivels – Help kids who need movement to stay engaged
πŸͺ‘ Sitting cushions & flexible chairs – Provide comfort while encouraging focus
πŸ“ Standing tables & write-on tables – Allow students to move while learning
πŸ–οΈ Fidgets & sensory tools – Support self-regulation and attention without distraction

Students don’t just use these toolsβ€”they learn how to use them effectively! We teach kids when and how to choose the right tool for their focus, helping them build independence and self-awareness.

This program is perfect for students who:

βœ”οΈ Learn best through movement, hands-on activities, or alternative methods
βœ”οΈ Need structured breaks and self-regulation strategies to stay engaged
βœ”οΈ Have difficulty staying focused or sitting still in traditional classrooms
